Wormhole

In progress....

What Happens: Corrine and Josie travel through the wormhole to Pearadyne labs– moments before the accident.

What's Involved:  The main thing to understand is what wormholes and black holes are, and how they differ. This is later addressed in Storm, but the lesson is interrupted by Durst.

Let's skip ahead to that episode for a minute.

As Z states, both bend space around them. For information on curved space, check the Fate page. Read The part in navy blue with asterisks (*.)

The club had erroneously labeled their wormhole as a black hole. The difference, Z informs them, is that a wormhole has a way out. It serves as a shortcut through space, and possibly time.

You read the "Fate" bit, right? Okay, I trust you...

Now, the same way the bowling ball in the blanket example causes more disturbance than the beach ball or marble, a singularity causes curvature to an infinite degree. Gravity becomes infinite, and even light cannot escape it. Since our sight depends on light bouncing off an object, we are unable to see this "hole," hence the "black" moniker. For our purposes, this is all you need to know right now.

So how does a wormhole work?

Picture our blanket again. Bend it in a U-shape. Now pretend you're walking along it (It's a really big blanket.) Just like the earth, the straight line you walk is curved. But there's an easier way to go. Imagine a hole in the blanket where you started. There's, say, a (once again, really big) straight paper towel tube in the hole. Go through it. You come out the other side through another hole in the blanket... on the opposite end. Essentially, you have taken a shortcut.

Same thing with a mountain on Earth. You can get to the other side by taking a normal path. But there happens to be a tunnel going straight through the mountain.

By the way, the area between (under the blanket and around the wormhole) is known as hyperspace.

There are a couple problems with having a wormhole. It may be best to list them:

1.

2.

However, a large number of scientists remain hopeful. gkh
